"Why not," I responded like the village idiot.
That was the start of our great camp out experience. Neither, my hubby nor myself, were campers. All you need to do is obtain the best equipment and you really are set, right? Wrong, or so wrong, and on so many levels.
I must admit it was fun searching for all the goodies needed to get a great camping adventure. The tent, down filled sleeping bags, a lantern, cooking utensils, stove, fishing rods and reels, and people cute little lures. Those lures were adorable, it had been like shopping for earrings. The shopping turned out to be the best part of our own camp out. We literally spent hours shopping, coupled with a blast choosing the best tent. It must be comfortable enough for 2 adult, two children (ages seven and eleven), and two dogs. We walked inside and out of numerous tents prior to you buying the perfect one. It was a humdinger, a real tent extravaganza, big enough to Tents throw a circus in. Well, maybe not the it turned out big.
The week with the camp out, we had been all busy and excited planning and having ready for that trip. We were traversing to a state park a few hours away. We had never been Adventure Medical to that state park before, figured it had to be a perfect camp destination, after all, this is a state park.
Friday came, none to soon. The girls were animated and giggling, while they anticipated each of the fun these folks were going to have. I had drinks and groceries iced down within the ice chest, the chips and also other yummies in bags, as well as a fried chicken dinner packed in the most delightful picnic basket.
All that has been missing was my workaholic husband, who although was removing early, was running late, as usual. He filled the station wagon with gas on his way home, and backed the car to the garage to make it more accessible for loading. He dashed in the house, changed clothes, and make up for lost time (we were losing daylight), frantically threw the camping equipment within the back with the wagon, and slammed the doorway shut.
He came inside and announced we had been ready to go. The girls gathered up their dogs and that we proceeded on the garage.
We stopped dead within our tracks, when we realized the car was full of smoke. I hurried the ladies and their dogs back within the house. My husband, not seeing any flames, opened a corner door from the car. He had shut the vehicle door over a box of matches, hence the smoke. He managed to get the smoldering matches in check without major incidence. I shutter to think what might have been: gas tank full, car, expensive camping gear, garage, garage attached for the house.
The smoke cleared out in the car, we yet again started on our camping adventure. We stopped, at the little country store, just beyond your park, and bought minnows for bait.
Once in the park we hunted for the best camp site, then finally settled for almost any camp site. I never realized so many people went camping.
It needs to have been taken as an omen, once we found a horse tail, a whole horse tail, full of cockle burs right then the tent must be erected. I guess, someone got fed up with pulling out the burs and whacked over horse's tail. The tail was disposed of in a nearby garbage receptacle. We create camp and the tent. It was now dark, not the gorgeous dark with all the moon reflecting from the lake, but dark like spooky dark. We took our picnic within the tent, to get out with the rain. Yeah, are you able to believe it? It was raining and the wind had grabbed considerably.
It would have been cozy fun, the glow in the lantern, a family group with their small dogs, creating a picnic, whether or not this had not been to the wind. The wind was relentless, Adventure Medical it whipped in the tent like a demon demanding entrance. The girls ended up pale, since we discovered the horse tail, now they were ghostly white. The dogs whimpering and pacing nervously in circles around us certainly didn't help to calm our nerves.
You could hear a cacophony, of noise, beyond your tent. The wind was in a genuine Adventure Medical Heatsheets Survival Blanket Two Person Reviews frenzy, inducing the tent walls to heave inside and out, it turned out like being in the bowels of some hideous monster. It wasn't tough to envision tree limbs being scammed and hurling about, or maybe a tail less horse whirling around within the agitated air.
Our plush sleeping bags laid unused about the tent floor. Sleep would escape us; or should I say, sleep would not catch us. We were terrified.
It was inevitable, our seven years old painfully declared she necessary to go the toilet. She was so pathetic in her own admission and plea, her eyes were packed with tears; one blink and it turned out waterworks for sure.
A bolt of lightening so close it lit up everything like high noon. The thunder followed immediately, vibrating the tent and rattling our teeth.
That did it. "Everybody, stock up we're away from here," my better half said in a booming voice. It needed to be booming to get heard in the wrath of nature.
The girls and I got everything, in the tent, together. My husband, not so lucky, he previously to get the stuff outside the tent. The girls, the dogs, the camping gear, and myself, sat inside the car, as the man in the family, fought the elements and disassembled the tent. I panicked when I lost sight of him, and almost jumped away from my skin when he opened the rear door and tossed within the tent and minnow bucket. The reason I lost sight of him? He went for the lake to free the minnows.
The cacophony of sound have been other campers...leaving. We could experienced our selection of any camp site in the park.
The storm was waning once we went out the park entrance, but we had our fill of camping. It was home or bust. Oh yeah, we did need to make one stop, from necessity.
We listened on the news on our way home, and learned there ended up two tornadoes inside area. Whew! Close call.
And how about all that fancy camping equipment? We love it. Turns out you don't have to leave home to camp out. The best part of camping in your back yard? It storms, you go within the house; you tell scary stories and get scared, you go within the house; nature calls, indoor plumbing a blessing no more overlooked.
